Commonly referred to as CSUN, the abbreviation for conference sponsor California State University Northridge, the conference draws thousands of participants annually and is the largest gathering of its kind on technology and people with disabilities. Lainey has been presenting at CSUN for many years. This year, both of her sessions are with co-counsel Linda Dardarian of the Oakland, California civil rights firm Goldstein, Borgen, Dardarian and Ho.

Web Accessibility Legal Update

On Wednesday, February 27, Lainey and Linda will be presenting their Annual CSUN Web Accessibility Legal Update. Topics will include

  • What ever happened to the U.S. Department of Justice web regulations (and should advocates care)?
  • What does the victory in the Netflix captioning case mean for web accessibility generally?
  • What companies continue to avoid legal battles over web accessibility by working with the blind community in the Structured Negotiations process?
  • What did the court rule in the eBay and Facebook web cases and does it matter?
  • What’s happening with the deaf community’s captioning case against CNN?
  • What does the law have to say about accessibility of mobile apps? (and how did MLB hit the first home run)?
  • Whatever happened to the litigation against JetBlue Airways and will new DOT regulations improve airline website access?
  • How are legal strategies advancing accessibility for students everywhere?
  • What’s next (and how can advocates influence the answer)?

Bring your questions in person, or use Twitter hashtag #CSUN13law to send your questions either before or during the session. The Legal Update session will held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 10:40 AM PST in Mohsen AB 3rd Floor.

Structured Negotiations: A Winning Strategy for Technology and Information Access

The law can be a punch in the stomach or an outstretched hand. On Friday, March 1, Lainey and Linda will be presenting on Structured Negotiations, a legal strategy that protects civil rights and advances accessibility with an outstretched hand. [For more on practicing law with an outstretched hand, see: https://www.lflegal.com/2011/09/fifteen/] For over 15 years Structured Negotiations has resulted in sweeping accessibility improvements for the blind community across the country without any lawsuits being filed. Thousand of Talking ATMs, tactile point of sale devices, Braille and Large Print bank statements, credit reports and other financial information, accessible health information, Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), talking pill bottles and accessible web pages are “proof” of the success of this legal advocacy method.

In this session, which we hope will include significant audience participation, we will explore the nuts and bolts of the Structured Negotiations process and discover ways the method can be used in the future.

Bring your questions in person, or use Twitter hashtag #CSUN13law to send your questions either before or during the session. The CSUN 2013 Structured Negotiations session will held on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 10:40 AM PST in Gregory AB. 2d Floor.
